Mariya Gilliland, 14, from Eagle River, Alaska, will be competing in four Snowshoe Biathlon events at the Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, March 4-10, 2012. Maine Guide Snowshoes has generously provided newly designed racing snowshoes for her to use in these events. The Arctic Winter Games is a high profile circumpolar sport competition for northern and Arctic athletes. Teams are competing from Yamil Russia, Yukon, NWT, Greenland, Nunavut, N. Alberta, Nunavik Quebec, Sapmi, and Alaska. The Games celebrate sport, social exchange and cultures. Mariya has participated in Biathlon for one year, training with coaches Tom Grenier and Simon Gilliland and the Alaska Biathlon Club in Anchorage, Alaska. She will be competing in four separate events: 2K sprint, 2.5K mass start, 3K sprint, and a 3 X 2K relay. Mariya is an avid Nordic and Alpine skier, learning to ski when she was just two years old. She also is passionate about playing her violin, enjoys writing, fishing, and backpacking with her family in the mountains near her home."
